Research & Advances in Cataract Treatment

Modern research in cataract treatment continues to yield exciting new discoveries.

Torsional Phacoemulsification

The most significant recent advancement, perhaps, is torsional phacoemulsification. This revolutionary new technique is changing the way surgeons perform cataract surgery and may soon make traditional linear ultrasound obsolete.

Torsional phaco uses ultrasonic oscillations to cut with a side-to-side motion instead of just a forward stroke, making it easier for surgeons to break up and remove the eye's natural lens.

Prevention

Some studies suggest that the use of statins, a class of cholesterol lowering drugs, may help prevent the formation of nuclear cataracts. Other researchers have focused their efforts on nutrients such as lutein and zeaxanthin as well as bilberry extract.
