Custom Cataract Surgery

Cataract removal is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures. At Highland Ophthalmology, we utilizes the latest technology to customize our cataract surgery based on the specific needs and expected results of each of our patients. The basic procedures of cataract surgery begins by making a tiny incision in the eye and then inserting an instrument about the size of a pen tip to break up and remove the cloudy lens. Once the cloudy lens is removed, a monofocal Intraocular Lens (IOL) is then inserted through the same tiny incision and set into its permanent position.

Most people are surprised to find out just how easy and pain-free cataract surgery is. It usually takes 20-30 minutes or less and most patients are back to their normal activities the very next day. Once a cataract is removed, it cannot return.

The majority of our cataract patients are satisfied with traditional cataract treatment. Limited by Medicare or private insurance coverage, the only option has been the single vision or Monofocal IOL that corrects distance vision and usually required reading glasses or bifocals for near and intermediate vision. With the advent of new Multifocal IOLs and Toric IOLs, patients now have a choice, based on the visual outcome that optimizes their lifestyle and eye health. Our ultimate goal is to provide our patients with the best possible vision, over a full range of distances, greatly reducing the need for glasses following cataract surgery.

At Highland Ophthalmology Associates, our eye surgeons will discuss with you the options available based on your particular situation and expected outcome.

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal lenses are specially designed to replace cataracts and correct presbyopia (loss of reading) at the same time—that means that nearly every patient after cataract surgery is free from glasses! The goal of these lenses is to give you a full range of clear vision, near to far, and everywhere in between. Click here to read more about Multifocal IOLs.

Toric IOLs

For patient’s with significant corneal astigmatism, the Toric IOL provides our patients with a new option. Similar to monofocal IOLs, these lenses usually give patients quality distance vision with less dependence on glasses, but it is designed to correct spherical aberrations (a change in curvature between the center and edge of your pupil that causes multiple focal points and blurry vision). Most patients will still need to wear glasses for tasks such as reading or working on a computer. Click here to read more about Toric IOLs.

Accommodating Lenses [do you want this included here?]

The Crystalens® is an accommodating Intraocular Lens (IOL) that, unlike a standard IOL, can treat both a person's cataracts and presbyopia—loss of near and intermediate vision. You probably noticed in your forties that you started to lose some of your up-close vision and had to start wearing reading glasses. Crystalens® not only treats your cataracts (a clouding or hardening of your lens), but can also reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses. It does so by recreating accommodation similar to your eye's natural lens. The unique Crystalens® is designed to allow you to enjoy a fuller, more natural range of vision for most activities, including: reading a book, working on the computer, and driving a car.

Crystalens® was modeled after the human eye. Like the natural lens, it uses the eye muscle to flex and accommodate in order to focus on objects in the environment at all distances. Crystalens dynamically adjusts to your visual needs.

Crystalens® is designed to allow the optic, or the central circular part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as you constantly change focus on images around you. Crystalens, like your natural lens, flexes as you focus your vision.
