Cataract Surgery Preparation

Now that you've met with us and have learned that you are indeed a good candidate for cataract surgery, you should be instructed by one of our surgeons on what you can do before surgery day to prepare.

Some of our advice may include the following:

  • Schedule time off from work. Most people need at least one day to recover before resuming their regular work schedules.
  • Make arrangements for a ride the day of the surgery, to and from the hospital or surgery center. Tell your spouse, caregiver, or friend that the entire process from check-in to checkout should last about 2 to 3 hours. You may also need someone to pick up postoperative medications for you and give you a ride to your follow-up exam the next day.
  • Eat a light breakfast or skip it on the day of the procedure, depending on our surgeon's advice. As a general rule, patients are asked to refrain from alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours prior to surgery.
  • Shower and wash your hair on the day of the surgery to help maintain a clean surgical environment. You should also wear clean, comfortable clothes.
